Erik Buch Biography
Erik Buch, a Danish industrial designer born in 1923 in Copenhagen, stands out for his use of simple, organic and soft lines, through which he created distinctive, modern mid-20th century designs. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, Buch expertly combined fabric and leather with fine woods, such as polished teak, oak and rosewood, enhancing their beautiful grains. His successful reputation is primarily attributed to the creation of his iconic Model 49 chair in 1949, featuring a curved "floating" seat and a classic Scandinavian modern aesthetic.
Most of Buch's designs are named after the year they were conceived, especially those produced in collaboration with the cabinetmaker and furniture manufacturer Oddense Maskinsnedkeri. It should be noted that Oddense was subsequently renamed OD Møbler in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a change which is reflected in the labels of subsequent productions, such as the Model 61. Although some sources exist which suggest a death in 1982, the most accepted date of Buch's death is 1973. His personal life remains little known, but his professional legacy will continue to be appreciated thanks to the relevance of his designs on the vintage market, which stand out for their use of high-quality materials, solid craftsmanship and a Scandinavian aesthetic.
