Eugène Burnand, born in Moudon on 30 August 1850, was a prolific painter and printmaker in Switzerland. Born to wealthy parents who taught him to appreciate art and the countryside, he first trained as an architect but soon realized that his vocation was painting. He studied art in Geneva and Paris, then settled in Versailles. Throughout his life he traveled extensively and lived in Florence on several occasions.
He died of pneumonia in his Paris home on 4 February 1921.
Most of his works depict rural scenes, often with animals but he was also interested in sacred painting and the illustration of scenes and parables from the New Testament.
Between 1907 and 1912 some of Burnand's illustrations were used for the second series of Swiss National Bank banknotes.
