Pier Francesco Cairo Biography

Pier Francesco Cairo (1607 - 1665) is an Italian painter, born in Morazzone and trained in this artistic area, as demonstrated by his first youthful works such as “the Ecstasy of Sant'Andrea Avellino” in S. Antonio Abate in Milan and “ the altarpiece with Saint Teresa", now exhibited at the Certosa di Pavia. In 1633 he moved to Turin to the court of the Savoy, where he painted a series of works including "Salome", "Herodiad" and "Christ in Orto". Between 1646 and 1649, he returned to Turin to create the large canvas of the "Finding of Moses" and some altarpieces for Savigliano and for the church of S. Salvario. Cairo is in Rome where he studies the great masters of the past such as Guido Reni, Domenichino, Guercino and Caravaggio. After returning to Lombardy, Cairo executes important works such as the "Madonna with Saints Catherine of Siena and Catherine of Alexandria" for the Certosa di Pavia. and the “San Carlo Borromeo of Casalpusterlengo”. In his last Milanese period he painted the altarpiece with Saint John the Baptist today in Aicurzio and the “Great Assumption” for Orta.
