Randolph Caldecott was born in Chester, England, on March 22, 1846.
After leaving school he worked for Whitchurch & Ellesmere Bank and took up hunting.
In 1861, his first drawing was published in the Illustrated London News.
In 1872, he left his banking job to become a successful full-time illustrator in London, publishing successful drawings and series of illustrations for magazines including the London Society.
He embarked on a collaboration with Edmund Evans, becoming his principal illustrator. In 1878, he published his first children's book, "The House that Jack Built."
In 1886, during a trip to the United States, he died due to a serious illness.
