Alberto Calligaris, born in 1880 in Udine, was an Italian artist and entrepreneur. From a young age he began working in the Calligaris workshop, founded by his father Giuseppe. Over the years, Calligaris stood out for his skill in wrought iron, both in the art nouveau period up to 1914, and in the subsequent phase of the twenties and thirties, in which he reinterpreted Renaissance and eighteenth-century motifs. His boil-welding technique and the inclusion of colored glass spheres gave a unique look to his works. The popularity of Officina Calligaris grew over time, leading the company to operate outside its region, in cities such as Treviso, Padua and Venice. During the First World War, Calligaris collaborated with important figures such as D'Annunzio and Celso Costantini for the creation of the heroes' cemetery of Aquileia. After Calligaris' death on 20 April 1960, his children continued the company business until the workshop closed in 1985.
