Dionisio Calvaert Biography
Denijs Calvaert or Calvart, known in Italy as Dionisio Fiammingo, was born in Antwerp around 1540.
Calvaert came to Italy, probably in his twenties, eager to learn figure painting. In this period, he settled in Bologna where he was hosted by the Bolognini patrons and where he attended the school of the painter Prospero Fontana for two years. Subsequently, he carried out works in collaboration with L. Sabbatini, with whom he participated in the decoration of the control room in the Vatican. In 1573, Calvaert left master Sabbatini to dedicate himself exclusively to the study of the great Italian masters, in particular Raphael, Barocci and Correggio.
Returning to Bologna, Calvaert opened a school that attracted numerous young painters, including G. Reni, Domenichino and F. Albani, but the lack of programmatic bases prevented this school from having a truly innovative character.
Calvaert produced numerous devotional works and painted several works for the churches of Bologna. His other important works are housed in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna.
Calvaert died in 1619 and was buried in the same city.
