Luca Cambiaso Biography

Luca Cambiaso was born in Moneglia on 18 October 1527 and was an Italian painter. He took the path of art following in the footsteps of his father Giovanni and soon began to be influenced by the artists of Genoese mannerism, with Perin del Vaga as his main example.
Cambiaso was a bold and passionate designer, with an innovative style compared to that of the masters Raphael and Michelangelo. It is said that he sometimes worked with a brush in each hand. Working closely with the works of Correggio and the Venetians of the late Renaissance, he has often been compared to the master Tintoretto.
In Cambiaso's work, one can see a highly individual style, with essential geometric shapes defined with an almost cubist aesthetic. His works can be admired above all in Genoa, in the church of San Giorgio, where the Martyrdom of San Giorgio is present, and in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta da Carignano, where his masterpiece, "la Pietà", which also contains a self-portrait and the figure of the sister-in-law he loved very much.
Luca Cambiaso died in San Lorenzo de El Escorial on 6 September 1585, leaving a lasting imprint on Italian painting.
