Pasquale Domenico Cambiaso was born in Genoa in 1811 and studied at the Accademia Ligustica in Genoa, as well as with the painter and set designer G. Boccaccio in Parma. He subsequently moved to Naples, where he may have been in contact with the Posillipo School, before returning to Genoa and dedicating himself to painting views, especially Ligurian ones. In 1834 he was elected Academician of Ligustica and exhibited his first works in 1836 and 1837, trying to combine the analytical taste of the traditional view with more realistic elements. His subsequent production, exhibited at the Promotrice from 1850 to 1887, shows his evolution towards a romantic landscape painting, influenced by A. Calame and C. Markò senior. Cambiaso was also interested in representing episodes of daily life, as in the case of Part of the Palazzo del Principe Doria from 1864. His albums of views, created with different techniques, are considered precious documents of the conditions of the Ligurian cities and landscapes before the demolitions and subsequent transformations. He died in 1894.
