Charles Camoin was a French painter born on 23 September 1879 in Marseille.
During his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in the class of Gustave Moreau, he met Henri Matisse with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship.
Camoin joined the Fauves, a group of expressionist artists that included André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, Matisse himself and many others. However, he never fully joined the artistic group's chromatic revolution, always maintaining a style and use of colors more similar to Matisse's chromatic balance.
Camoin always showed a strong stylistic affinity with the artist, so much so that he painted him in a portrait which is now part of the collection of the Center Pompidou in Paris. Read the full biography

Charles Camoin Biography

Charles Camoin was a French painter born on 23 September 1879 in Marseille.
During his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in the class of Gustave Moreau, he met Henri Matisse with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship.
Camoin joined the Fauves, a group of expressionist artists that included André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, Matisse himself and many others. However, he never fully joined the artistic group's chromatic revolution, always maintaining a style and use of colors more similar to Matisse's chromatic balance.
Camoin always showed a strong stylistic affinity with the artist, so much so that he painted him in a portrait which is now part of the collection of the Center Pompidou in Paris. Camoin's works have been exhibited in several French cities and are part of important collections such as that of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Center Pompidou.
In 1955, Camoin was awarded the Prix du Président de la République at the Menton Biennial. He died on May 20, 1965, leaving an important contribution to the field of French expressionist art.
