Gigi Candiani Biography

Gigi Candiani (1903 - 1963) The painter Gigi (Luigi) Candiani was born in Mestre on 07/05/1903. A town to which he is inextricably linked starting from his family bakery business and art. Artistically speaking, Gigi Candiani began his studies at the “Ticozzi” School of Art in Mestre. On a pictorial level he was a pupil of Pio Semeghini in the contents and way of understanding the landscape. The places of the subjects painted in his works range from Venice, Treviso, Padua, Ravenna, Asolo to Vicenza, Chioggia and Bibione. The first collective exhibition took place in 1926. Gigi Candiani also participated in the collective exhibitions of the Opera Bevilacqua La Masa from 1929 to 1961, in four editions of the National Art Quadrennial of Rome and in three editions of the Venice Art Biennale . Candiani died in Mestre on 09/14/1963. The historical memory of the Maestro was, in subsequent years, carried forward by his son Domenico Candiani (1942-1997) through careful organization and curation of posthumous exhibitions in institutional venues with also donations. Upon Domenico's death, the baton was taken over by his brother Rolando who took over the art of the painter Gigi, through a personal style, always continuing a process of exhibitions and donations. Recently, we remember the innovative monographs written by the art critic and curator Dr Alain Chivilò. In 2013 "Gigi Candiani Tessere di vita"; in 2015, after having listened to numerous requests highlighted by those who appreciated the contents of the previous work, the new monograph "Gigi Candiani Atmosfere Rarefatte" was released in a completely revised re-edition, expanded in content, images and format. Unpublished documents never published before of the artist and his family through a new examination compared to the previous ones over the years, with an interesting final gallery divided between drawings and oils. In 2017 the municipality of Conegliano Veneto organized an anthological exhibition in Palazzo Sarcinelli, Galleria del Novecento.
