Antonio Canella Biography
Antonio Canella, born in 1849 and died in 1922, was a genre painter active in Venice between 1870 and 1887. There is not much biographical information about him, but there is evidence of his works exhibited in national exhibitions. He has exhibited mainly in Milan, Turin and Genoa, with genre subjects executed in watercolour, oil and pastel. His works focus on the meticulous description of scenographic details, with many eighteenth-century settings. The use of a light palette and the almost total absence of chiaroscuro make the scenes lack consistent depth. The attention to detail, the passion for chinoiserie, fine fabrics and rich tapestries have made his works popular on the foreign market.
He participated in the Turin Exhibition in 1886, where he exhibited various genre works, such as "Interior of a convent", "Magazine in the folder", Concierge nun", "Contemplation", "Old stuff", "Librarian", " A naive man” and “Quiet”.
