Niccolò Cannicci was born on 29 October 1846 in Florence. From his father's first pictorial teachings, Cannicci attended the Academy of Fine Arts in his city under the guidance of Enrico Pollastrini. Later, he studied occasionally at the Free School of the Nude.
In 1868, the painter retired to his father's house in Poggetto, where he dedicated himself to the study of nature and the protection of the local artistic heritage. His early works followed purist canons without rejecting the realist approach.
Cannicci regularly participated in official and periodic artistic events and was also present at the Venice International Exhibition. At the end of 1891, the painter was hospitalized for a long time in the Siena mental hospital, and from this experience was born "Album with portraits of mentally ill people", which he gave to his patron and friend, Diego Martelli. The artist died in Florence on 19 January 1906.
His works can today be found in Italian and foreign private collections and in Italian museums.
