Arduino Cantafora Biography

Arduino Cantafora (1945 - ) was born in Milan in 1945. Architect, professor of architecture at the University of Venice (IUAV) (1982-1986) and at the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio (AAM) in Ticino (1998-2011). In 1989 he was appointed full professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he heads the chair of visual expression. Since 2011 he has been an honorary professor at EPFL. In 1988 he was invited as "Visiting Professor" at Yale University (USA). From 1973 to 1978 he collaborated with Aldo Rossi. In 1973 he exhibited the painting "La città analoga" at the Milan Triennale, which became the manifesto of a new trend that recovered elements of rationalism from twentieth-century European architecture and returned historical places to the center of architectural design concerns. He still took part in the Milan Triennials in 1981, 1985 and 1987. He was also present at the Venice Biennale in the architecture section in 1978, 1980 and in 1984 at the Biennale of Visual Arts. In 2006, the National Museum of Modern Art (MNAM) at the Center Pompidou in Paris acquired around eighty works of his production for its permanent collection.
