Remigio Cantagallina Biography

Remigio Cantagallina, born in 1582 in Borgo San Sepolcro, was an artist of noble Perugian origin specialized in engraving, drawing and painting. Active mainly in Florence, he worked for many years together with his brothers.
Cantagallina collaborated with his master Giulio Parigi, architect and set designer of the Medici court, in the creation of shows for the wedding of Cosimo II de' Medici with Mary Magdalene of Austria. In the following years, Cantagallina dedicated himself to the execution of numerous engravings with views of some places in Tuscany, influenced by the works of Nordic artists.
One of the most important testimonies of his activity is represented by the notebook of one hundred and five sheets, created during the trip to the Netherlands where he wrote down the visions of landscapes and cities. Returning to Italy, Cantagallina continued to produce numerous drawings, now preserved in the Uffizi in Florence and in other museum collections throughout Europe.
He died in Florence in 1656.
