Josef Čapek (Hronov, 23 March 1887 – Bergen Belsen, April 1945) was a Czech painter and writer. Brother of Karel Čapek, he was the author of various works in collaboration with his brother (including On the Life of Insects, 1925), but also wrote others independently. These include Lelio (1917) and The Land of Many Names (1923). He died in April 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Germany, where he was deported due to his hostile attitude towards the policies of Hitler and the Führer himself. While in prison he wrote Básně z koncentračního tabora, a collection of poems, published posthumously in 1946.
