Gaetano Capone was born in Maiori in 1845. He trained as a painter at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples and then in Rome, at the Accademia di San Luca, where he was a pupil of Cesare Fracassini. In 1864, he collaborated with the master in the creation of the frescoes in the central nave of the Basilica of San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura. After Fracassini's death, Capone returned to Naples to continue studying with Filippo Palizzi and Domenico Morelli, who passed on to him the realist language that characterizes him.
Returning to Maiori, Capone dedicated himself mainly to genre scenes, linked to the tradition of the Neapolitan school. Over the years, he has participated in numerous national exhibitions, including those in Rome and Venice.
Although at the beginning his production was focused on genre scenes and the representation of the daily life of the people, in the following years Capone was defined as a "coastal painter" for his interpretation of the landscape and daily life of Maiori. In the last years of his life, Capone also devoted himself to watercolor painting.
He died in Maiori in 1924.
