Roger Capron Biography

Roger Capron (1922-2006) received his studies at the School of Applied Arts in Paris. The discovery of the world of ceramics pushed the master to change his artistic medium: in 1946 he settled in Vallauris, where he founded the "Callis" ceramic workshop, applying the motto of his teacher René Gabriel: "making beauty accessible to everyone". Thanks to the participation of the laboratory, Vallauris experienced a rebirth in the ceramic sector, in collaboration with other great artists such as Picasso.
In 1952 Roger Capron started the "Atelier Capron", a small factory which initially employed around fifty workers. His creations often use terracotta or glazed lava tiles, traditionally intended for the creation of decorative panels. This peculiar reinterpretation of the use of ceramics for furniture and objects has become the designer's distinctive signature. Capron was the first to make his expertise in the field of ceramics available to the semi-industrial panorama. The original workshop gradually developed into a small factory, gaining international fame.
Some works by Roger Capron are exhibited at the National Ceramics Museum of Sèvres and the Magnelli Museum of Vallauris.
