Cigoli, pseudonym of Ludovico Cardi, was born in 1559 in Cigoli to a noble family with origins in the Gualandi of Pisa. Active between the periods of mannerism and baroque, he was a painter, architect and sculptor, and is considered among the initiators of Florentine baroque.
He studied with Alessandro Allori and Santi di Tito, collaborating with Allori for the preparation of the funeral apparatus of Grand Duke Cosimo I. Read the full biography

Cigoli, pseudonym of Ludovico Cardi, was born in 1559 in Cigoli to a noble family with origins in the Gualandi of Pisa. Active between the periods of mannerism and baroque, he was a painter, architect and sculptor, and is considered among the initiators of Florentine baroque.
He studied with Alessandro Allori and Santi di Tito, collaborating with Allori for the preparation of the funeral apparatus of Grand Duke Cosimo I. He had a large workshop in Florence and was a member of the Accademia Fiorentina and the Accademia della Crusca. He worked for the Medici, in Florence and Rome, carrying out many works including the dome of the Pauline chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore.
He died in Rome in 1613 and is buried in Santa Felicita in Florence.
