Holme Cardwell, born in Manchester on 20 May 1813, studied at the Royal Academy School in London in 1834. Building a strong reputation, gaining a silver medal for a model in 1839, he moved to Paris in 1841 to study with David d 'Angers. He probably spent three years in Paris, attending the Académie Royale, before moving to Rome. During his career, he moved many times between Rome and London, but made his main residence in Rome. Cardwell had a predilection for monumental sculptural groups made of marble. There is little information about the artist's life but it appears he was made an honorary member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts in the 1990s. He died in Italy in 1895.
