Augusto Carelli was born on 7 July 1871 in Naples. We know little about his life other than that he was a painter and set designer.
Carelli was raised in an essentially musical environment and, in addition to music, he studied painting, developing a remarkable mastery of color and technique. However, manipulating colors with his hands caused him to have saturnism, forcing him to abandon painting and focus only on music.
In 1893 he moved to Russia to teach singing at the Petersburg Conservatory, settling there for about twenty-one years.
At the beginning of the twentieth century he resumed painting, starting with watercolor and then with oil. In 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War, determined to remain in Italy, he settled in Rome. After having lost all his resources due to the bankruptcy of the Italian Bank, he began to dedicate himself to set design, first as a sketch designer and then as a director.
Carelli died in Rome on 23 November 1940.
