Alberto Carlieri was born in Rome in 1672 and studied painting with Giuseppe de Marchis, later becoming a pupil and collaborator of Andrea Pozzo. In 1707 he painted a large picture entitled "Achilles among the daughters of Lycomedes". His paintings are characterized by illusionistic depictions of architecture, the liveliness of figures, the stark contrast between light and shadow, and the vibrant use of color that was influenced by Pozzo's palette. Architecture in his paintings is conceived as a clear vision of open and closed spaces and these elements achieve the best synthesis especially in history paintings where the figures and architecture blend together in a compact way.
Carlieri died around 1720.
