Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 15 February 1924) is an Italian photographer. He was born in Genoa to a bourgeois family of Jewish origin. In 1960 he abandoned his activity as a pianist for photography, seeing it as an instrument of political commitment and a means of carrying out, through his gaze on others, a profound journey of existential research. After a first experience at the Duse theater, he signed documentary and social denunciation reports such as the one on the Genoese dock workers, and photo stories. Between 1958 and 1967 he visited Israel several times, in the early 1970s he traveled to Afghanistan and India. In 1972 he published Travestiti for the publisher Essedi Editrice of Rome, a book that caused a scandal. His travels to the East culminated in the meeting with the master Babaji and marked the second turning point in his life. In 1979 he founded the Bhole Baba ashram in Cisternino, Puglia, and dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of his master. In March 1993 Patrizia Pentassuglia will defend her degree thesis A life in search of truth, the first biography on Lisetta Carmi. In 2013, her biography written by journalist Giovanna Calvenzi, The Five Lives of Lisetta Carmi, was published.
