James Carpenter was born in 1949 in Washington and is an American lighting artist and designer. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1972, majoring in sculpture. During his studies, he had the opportunity to study with artist Dale Chihuly. Carpenter currently works at James Carpenter Design Associates, founded in 1979 as an interdisciplinary design studio, fusing art, engineering, architecture and the environment to re-establish and enhance connections to the natural environment. His professional expertise led to Carpenter's selection to design new public spaces and visitor amenities at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Carpenter's honors include the Institute Honor Award and the American Institute of Architects, awarded in 1991. In 2004, he was also included in the class of MacArthur Fellows.
