Francisco Díaz Carreño was born on January 29, 1836 and studied law at the Central University of Via Larga in San Bernardo. During his law studies, he attended the Higher School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving on Calle de Alcalá, where he participated with a painting in the first National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1856. Although he continued his artistic studies until 1861, Díaz Carreño he did not participate in the next two national exhibitions of 1858 and 1860. In 1864, after traveling in Italy, the artist returned to Madrid with a huge canvas on which he had depicted a scene from Spanish history. In 1866, during the Exhibition, he received a third class medal for the painting "Francesca da Rimini". After his father's death, the artist devoted himself to selling small paintings and copies of old masters made in the Prado Museum to increase his income. Furthermore, his drawings, watercolors and scientific lithographs were another source of income.
Díaz Carreño died on November 16, 1903.
