Rosalba Carriera (Venice, 7 October 1675 – Venice, 15 April 1757) was an Italian painter and portraitist. She was the first to use ivory in miniatures, giving it that characteristic shine of her works. She was also the first to not follow the academic rules that required the miniature to be created with short and well blended strokes and dots: instead she brought in the quick stroke characteristic of Venetian painting. She began her artistic career by painting snuffboxes with those figures of graceful ladies who later became his fortune transposed into miniatures on ivory.
