Eugène Carrière Biography

Eugène Carrière was born in 1849 in Gournay-sur-Seine. He was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel but during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 he was taken prisoner in Dresden, where he had the opportunity to learn about Rubens' painting, which influenced his early works.
He participated in several exhibitions and shared the aesthetic ideals of Auguste Rodin, with whom he formed a friendship. His style increasingly progressed towards a monochromatism of earth ocher, which inspired artists such as Picasso in his early manner. He was a reference artist in modern painting of the time and a leader of the "secessionist" movement, which led to the foundation of the National Society. Eugène Carrière taught at the Carrier Academy, attended by Matisse and Derain, who found total freedom of expression there. One of his most famous works is the "Maternity" present at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. He is known as the painter of crepuscular chiaroscuro and vaporous penumbra.
He died in Paris in 1906.
