Casati E Ponzio Biography

Cesare Casati was born in Italy in 1936. He was editor-in-chief and director of Domus magazine between 1961 and 1979 and then of La Mia Casa magazine in the following years. Throughout his career, he designed some very beautiful pieces (furniture, lighting, etc.) such as the famous Alda armchair (1966) or the Pelota lamp (1971). He also designed a series of chairs and tables for the beautiful Hotel Grifone in Italy. In 1968 he designed one of his most famous pieces with Emanuele Ponzio: the Pillola lamp. It is currently exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Pelota table lamp was designed in 1971 by Casati and Emanuele Ponzio for Lamperti, Design Studio DA, which has been developing architectural, urban planning, interior design, exhibition and industrial design projects since 1965. The lamp was designed to resemble a particular type of glove (Chistera) used in Pelota, a sport originating from the Basque Country in the north of Spain, straddling the Pyrenees. The structure is a combination of two-tone ABS plastic (reddish orange on the outside and white on the inside) and chrome plastic in a futuristic sculptural shape, in line with the production of Italian collectible design of the time.
