Giuseppe Caselli Biography

Giuseppe Caselli was born in Reggio Emilia in 1893. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he moved to La Spezia where he participated in numerous regional and national art exhibitions. He became friends with the painters Governato and Aprigliano and frequented the "La Spezia Artists" group during important artistic events.
Caselli is known as a portrait painter, but he gained his fame by painting beautiful seascapes, particularly panoramas of the Cinque Terre. He was particularly skilled at representing wave motion, as highlighted in several of Bonanni's critical essays.
Caselli had a strong focus on the innovative themes of the twentieth century, but he never forgot the importance of Divisionism, to which he dedicated himself around the 1920s, obtaining superlative results. He also depicted life in the Mauthausen prison camp, where he was a prisoner during the First World War, painting numerous works premonitory of the drama of the subsequent conflict.
Caselli's works are present in private and public collections throughout the national territory and abroad, but the most relevant part is in the province of La Spezia. He participated in several exhibitions, including the Exhibition of the Salone Arengario del Broletto in Novara in 1967, the Figurative Art Exhibition of the Circolo Corsari of La Spezia in 1965 and the Trade Union Exhibitions organized by the Municipality of Bonassola in 1966.
