Raffaele Casnedi was born in Dumenza on 24 September 1822. He immediately demonstrated a precocious aptitude for painting, so much so that already in 1831 he decorated a chapel in the Cremenaga cemetery with a fresco depicting the crucified Christ. His passion for painting led him to enroll at the Braidense Academy in Milan. On 12 February 1856 he was appointed adjunct professor of figure drawing at the Brera Academy. Teaching was a true vocation for Casnedi. However, his passion for painting never abandoned him. He continued to decorate churches, cities and towns, especially in the Brianza area, fueled by a sincere religious feeling.
In his easel production, alongside the patriotic and Risorgimento line, a romantic albeit mannered trend and a sort of tempered realism developed which led him to love genre subjects such as the Lombard peasant women washing at the lake or the Women of the countryside Roman.
Raffaele Casnedi died in Milan on 29 December 1892.
