Giovanni Agostino Cassana was probably born in Venice in around 1658. He is supposed to have debuted as a portraitist in a naturalistic style. The figure of Cassana has not yet been fully discovered. Several works attributed to him have been found, but not all are unanimously considered authentic. Cassana's works focused on the representation of living animals rather than still life. The influence of Genoese painting and the use of warm colors can be seen, especially in the more mature works, such as the Barnyard Animals, which demonstrate a fully baroque style and inspiration in seventeenth-century Dutch painting. Cassana produced few drawings, but one of these is presumed to be preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The painter died in Genoa around 1720, at the age of sixty-two.
