Gabriele Castagnola Biography

Gabriele Castagnola was a famous Italian painter born in Genoa on 14 November 1828.
After studying at the Accademia Ligustica in Genoa, he began his career as a cartoonist. In 1851 he made his debut at the Genoese Promotrice with a genre work called "The first pain".
In the following years, Castagnola tackled Risorgimento and Romantic subjects with intense chromaticism. He presented works such as "The return from the Crimea" in 1856, "Raffaello e la Fornarina" in 1858, "Aldruda Donati presenting his daughter to Buondelmonte" in 1859 and Castruccio found by Madonna Dianora Castracani in 1860. After short stays in Rome and Naples, Castagnola settled in Florence and became a regular visitor to Caffè Michelangiolo.
In 1862 he presented “Filippo Lippi, a Florentine painter who falls in love with the nun Lucrezia Buti and makes her flee from the convent", a theme which he later developed several times. In 1865 he exhibited in Genoa “The end of Alessandro de' Medici”, later purchased by Odo of Savoy.
In the 1970s Castagnola returned to his contemporary genre subjects.
Castagnola died in Florence on 31 August 1883.
