Pieter Casteels Iii Biography

Pieter Casteels III (1684 -1749) was a Flemish painter and printmaker best known for his portraits of flowers, hunting scenes and birds. He spent a significant part of his life in England where he had a varied career as a still life painter, printmaker and fabric designer.
He trained with his father. In 1708 he left with his brother-in-law Peter Tillemans for England to work for a picture dealer named Turner for whom they made copies of paintings by old masters. Casteels became an active participant in London's artistic community, enrolling in Kneller's Academy of Painting and Drawing in 1711 and becoming a member of the Rose & Crown Club. He returned briefly to Antwerp in 1712 where he became a member of the local Guild of St Luke in the same year.
Casteels settled permanently in England around 1717. He enjoyed considerable success as a painter of exotic flowers and birds which mainly served as decoration for doors and fireplaces. He simultaneously worked as an art dealer and imported paintings from all over Europe. His clients included James Stanley, Earl of Derby, who purchased both imported works of art and original works by Casteels.
In 1726 Casteels made a set of 12 bird prints, which he had engraved from his own images. The success of this project encouraged him to work on two further publications: “I Twelve Months of Flowers” and “I Twelve Months of Fruit”.
