Vincenzo Castella Biography

Vincenzo "Enzo" Castella (Naples, 21 April 1952) is an Italian photographer, guitarist and director. Lives and works in Milan. After studying Cultural Anthropology at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, he began his photographic activity in 1975. One of his most important works is Private Geography, color photographs of domestic interiors taken between 1975 and 1982. In 1976 he completed a journey through the south of the United States, where he made, together with Lucio Maniscalchi, the 16mm film Hammie Nixon's People, focusing on the colors and sounds of African-American society: a glimpse of the life of a family of bluesmen. Intentionally shot in a home-made style and lasting 38 minutes, the video documentary was edited at Cinecittà in 1979. In 2000 it was presented as part of the "Film Interrupted" festival at the "De Balie" cinema in Amsterdam. Since 1980 he has exhibited his works in Europe and the United States. In 1991 he published the Zone project (photographs from 1983 to 1990). In 1997 he began working on the work Città Nomadi, on contemporary Western cities. His works are preserved in major public and private archives and collections. He exhibits at the Venice Biennale and the Milan Triennale. Since 1994 he has worked on the "Buildings" project, urban portraits taken from very high positions, but never aerial. He collaborates with Pasquale Leccese's gallery "Le Case d'Arte" in Milan and the "Paul Andriesse Galerie" in Amsterdam.
