Roberta Castellano Biography
Roberta Castellano was born in Milan in 1970 and attended the Art School. She subsequently graduated in scenography at the Brera Academy. After some experiences in the scenographic field, she approached decoration and restoration. She mainly dealt with the recovery of the facades of historic buildings using the ancient graffiti technique. For many years he collaborated with the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, creating glass painting works for the Cappella dell'Ulivo and the Madonna Madre della Vita Church. He also created a series of paintings on glass for the San Raffaele Ciborium inside the headquarters of the Vita-Salute University of Milan, including the large painting "The Resurrection". He currently deals with decoration on canvas, panels, walls and glass.
For Castellano, painting is an extremely personal, intimate and personal moment. But it also becomes an overbearing need to talk to others and share thoughts. An art that is closely linked to feelings and sensations, but also physicality in handling colours, in the instinctive gesture of spreading them with the spatula and then finishing with a brush. “And then the words that arise with the images from deep within, impose themselves and become a single element with the figures, they are a voice for me and then have an almost decorative function. I hardly think of a new canvas without words.” The techniques used are oil and acrylic on canvas. The oil colors are spread on the canvas using a spatula and brush, while the words are engraved on the colour. When using acrylic paints, the possibility of experimenting with the technique increases.
Castellano's favorite subject is the human figure, especially female, and he focuses mainly on the eyes and hands. Often the subject is not completely defined but is lost in the background, drawing attention to the most refined part. The words are often written lightly with a brush, like a whisper that reinforces the image. The artist explores the sensations, feelings and emotions of mysterious and fascinating humanity.
