Giancarlo Castelvecchi (1933 - 2016) was a painter born in Portoferraio, Elba Island, in 1933. He began his artistic activity at a very young age in the Young Artists of Elba group, joining them since 1946 and participating in the 23 exhibitions organized by the group in various Italian cities. Graduated from the artistic high school of Florence, he also attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Professor of drawing and art history at the scientific high school of Portoferraio, he ceased his teaching activity only in 1996. A student of Carlo Domenici, he was also a promoter and president of the Raffaele Brignetti International Literary Prize, friend of Brignetti himself and other important figures of Italian journalism and culture, "forefather" of the Elban landscape painters, Castelvecchi was certainly an eclectic figure of artist and art lover, since the early post-war period when with the "blessing" of Llewelyn Lloyd that unrepeatable experiment of "collective painting" was born which was the Elban Artists Group, which Castelvecchi himself decided to reconstitute in 1988. He died on Elba in 2016.
