Bernardo Cavallino was an Italian Baroque painter born in Naples in 1616. Despite limited documentation on his training, he is considered an original and independent artist influenced by artists such as Caravaggio, Barocci, and Rubens. His work is characterized by brightness, golden chromatics, and diagonal compositions. His stylistic development was further influenced by Neapolitan painters such as Andrea Vaccaro and Massimo Stanzione, renowned for their distinctive use of light and color. Cavallino is celebrated for his mastery of realism and his skill in conveying expression and emotion in the visages of his subjects. Among his most famous works are the Immaculate Conception and the Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia. Cavallino died in Naples in 1656 due to a plague epidemic.
