Carlo Cego Biography

Carlo Cego was born in Valdagno (Vicenza) on 10 July 1939. Between 1947 and 1966 he lived in Rome where, in 1962, he graduated in Painting with Franco Gentilini at the Academy of Fine Arts. In Rome he frequented the Al Ferro bookshop – gallery di Cavallo, a meeting place for artists, poets and writers. Between 1966 and 1968 he was in Genoa, where he worked as a set designer in the inaugural phase of the experimental theater of the "Teatro Stabile" and in 1968 Gastone Novelli called him as his assistant at the Liceo Artistico di Brera and he remained in Milan until his death. Deeply and consistently linked to the generation of painters who created and continued the abstract line of Italian painting, Cego never participated in groups or movements but worked within a line of pictorial research linked to a poetic and luministic dimension. The body of his work can be read within an "alphabet and a syntax susceptible to infinite variations" in which the true subject is the search for light that enters the chromatic fields and the density of the pictorial material. Starting from 1980 he spent long periods in Otranto, where he painted in a small house-atelier conquered by the meridian light and the humanity of Salento and where he became part of the group of intellectuals and artists who stayed in the Salento city in those years.
