Andrea Celesti (Venice, 1637 – Toscolano, 1712) was an Italian painter.
He is the author of the portrait of Doge Nicolò Sagredo created in 1676 for the Sala dello Scrutinio of Palazzo Ducale. A few years later he was knighted by Doge Alvise Contarini. Around 1684 he was one of the authors of the decoration of the church of San Zaccaria, and in 1687 he became president of the School of Painters of Venice. Returning to Venice, he opened a workshop in Venice in 1700, and in 1708 he participated in the Fraglia of Venetian painters. He died in 1712. He painted a painting depicting the martyrdom of San Lorenzo, San Lorenzo, for the parish church of Verolanuova around 1703, a church dedicated to his saint. For the same church, around 1708, two other very large canvases were commissioned for the Rosary Chapel. The themes proposed by the painter were "The Birth of Mary" and "The Assumption of the Virgin". In these three paintings the painter's characteristic style is clearly distinguishable, which immerses the scene in a light darkness and enriches it with intense luminous tones. Subsequently, the Confraternita del Sacramento of Verolanova decided to also commission Andrea Celesti to create two large canvases for the church concerned, thus completing a large-scale pictorial project, but the painter's death prevented the continuation of the project. The choice therefore fell on Giambattista Tiepolo, who completed both canvases around 1740. He was an original painter, thanks to his ability to blend various styles and derivations, which allowed him to oscillate between dark paintings and the brightness of Veronese.
