Ettore Cercone Artwork valuations, appraisals and auction estimates

Ettore Cercone, born in Messina on 21 November 1850, enlisted in the Navy at a young age, participating in the battle of Lissa. During his travels in the East, Cercone used to collect specimens of marine flora and fauna for the "Aquarium" zoological station in Naples, where he worked as a researcher.

Ettore Cercone, born in Messina on 21 November 1850, enlisted in the Navy at a young age, participating in the battle of Lissa. During his travels in the East, Cercone used to collect specimens of marine flora and fauna for the "Aquarium" zoological station in Naples, where he worked as a researcher.
It is presumable that he lived in Naples, where he became friends with Domenico Morelli. In 1880, he created nine small paintings with Arab figures, preserved in the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. It is no coincidence that Cercone was interested in oriental themes, very fashionable for the bourgeois tastes of the time, the result of the memories of his travels.
His painting stands out for the image rendered with immediacy and colouristic expressiveness.
Cercone died in Piano di Sorrento on 12 September 1896.
