Giuseppe Detto Cavalier D'arpino Cesari Biography
Giuseppe Cesari, known as the Cavalier d'Arpino, born in Arpino around 1568, was an Italian painter, fresco painter and mannerist.
Son of a painter who worked on the decoration of the Vatican Loggias in Rome, the young Cesari, under the guidance of Pomarancio, stood out for his creativity and was soon admitted to the Accademia di San Luca, obtaining a commission that kept him busy for around forty years. 'years from 1595 to 1640, for the frescoes of the Palazzo dei Conservatori.
In 1600 he frescoed the Ascension in the transept of San Giovanni in Laterano. He took over the direction of the mosaic decoration works on the dome of St. Peter's and the frescoes of the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, and those of the Cappella Paolina in Santa Maria Maggiore between 1605 and 1612. He was very influential in the papal court during Clement's papacy VIII which gave him the title of "Knight of Christ", hence the nickname of Cavalier d'Arpino.
Although some of his early work was vigorous and colorful, his output was generally a rather dull repetition, not touching on the innovations of Caravaggio, who was his assistant for a short time, charged with painting fruit and flowers, or Carracci with whom he collaborated.
Cesari died in Rome on 3 July 1640.
