Maurice Chabas was born in Nantes on September 26, 1862, into an educated and cultured family. In 1878 he began his studies at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Nantes. In 1883, at the age of twenty-one, he continued his studies in Paris at the renowned Académie Julian. In 1892, the Belgian symbolist painter and theosophist Jean Delville, with whom Chabas shared various esoteric and occult interests, founded the Pour l'Art circle in Brussels, active between 1892 and 1895. From 1896, Chabas exhibited in many Salons d 'Art Idéaliste.
Each Salon was a great social event, during which Parisians met to immerse themselves in particular atmospheres. These meetings continued until the First World War.
Chabas was widely admired for his fascinating mystical paintings so much so that he obtained important commissions from Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, the King of Romania, poets, academics and Catholic bishops.
Among his most famous works are "Nemea" from 1894 and "Ritorno a Citera" from 1900.
Chabas died on December 11, 1947 in Versailles.
