Michael Challenger is a painter, sculptor and printmaker born in Kent in 1939. He studied at Goldsmiths' College School of Art from 1960-64 and then at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1964-66; for two years he taught at Goldsmiths' from 1968-70 and at the Slade from 1970-72. He also taught at the Sainsbury Prize for Sculpture in 1966 and since the late 1960s has shown his hard-edge geometric prints, paintings and sculptures at the London Arts Gallery, as well as in New York, Detroit and in Verona, Italy, where he held a study in the mid-1970s. Challenger is known for the canvases he produced in the 1960s and 1970s, featuring colorful hallucinatory geometric effects in interior spaces.
