The Russian artist Ilya Chashnik (Lucin, 1902 - Saint Petersburg, 1929) was one of the most important disciples of Kazimir Malevich and embraced the Suprematist principles supported by the latter.
Born into a modest Jewish family in Latvia, he spent his childhood in Vitebsk, where he was introduced to the world of painting by a local artist. In 1919 he moved to Moscow to continue his artistic training at the Higher State Art-Technical-Studios (Vkhutemas) in Moscow, but his attraction to the work of Marc Chagall pushed him to return to Vitebsk after a few months to attend the art school directed by him.
However, after meeting Malevich, who teaches at the same school, his art undergoes a radical change of direction and he becomes one of the most talented and loyal followers of his Suprematist master.
