Juste Chevillet, born in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1729 and died in Paris around 1802, was a renowned French engraver. He distinguished himself above all for the creation of the engravings for the Histoire Naturelle by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. After studying printmaking in Berlin under the guidance of George Frederic Schmidt, he moved to Paris to complete his studies. In 1755 he published the “Livre de Principes de Fleurs”, a collection of flower engravings, subsequently used as a source of decorations for marquetterie, such as for the creation of a foldaway desk for King Louis XV of France, the work of Riesener and Oeben.
Among Chevillet's works, we also remember the engraving of an oil painting of Benjamin Franklin, by Joseph Duplessis, used for a two-dollar bill.
Juste Chevillet's death occurred in Paris around 1802.
