Giovanni Battista Cipriani was born in Siena on 20 April 1766. He studied Latin and mathematics and later painting with Giuseppe Silini, a sculptor and architect from Siena. He won the prize from the Marcello Biringucci and Giulio Mancini Foundation, which allowed him to study architecture in Rome, where he settled.
Cipriani's main activity was that of an antiquarian draftsman and engraver.
Between 1796 and 1803 he published in Rome the three volumes of Cipriani's most prestigious work: "Monuments of ancient factories extracted from the drawings of the most famous authors". For each monument, plans, sections and studies of the decoration are presented, engraved with great precision, either in simple outline or in chiaroscuro. Some views, of reduced format, reveal a taste for ruins set in nature, while other tables underline the aspect of antiquarian and neoclassical reconstruction. The works demonstrate great technical skill, which also respond to topographical needs.
He died in Rome on 13 July 1839.
