Pier Francesco Cittadini Detto Il Milanese Biography

Pier Francesco Cittadini, or Pierfrancesco Cittadini, was born in Milan in 1616. Baroque painter, his artistic training took place in Bologna, where he studied under the guidance of Guido Reni, who influenced his early works, such as the "Martyrdom of the protomartyr" in S. Stefano. Around the middle of the century he moved to Rome, where he became closer to the environment of French artists who practiced genre painting. In that period he also obtained commissions from Louis XIV, thanks above all to the success he achieved with his still lifes and landscapes.
Among Cittadini's most important works are the four parts of the Seasons, also influenced by Domenichino and the Nordic atmospheres typical of Swanevelt. Also interesting is the Double portrait of Antonio and Agostino Azzurrini of Faenza, preserved in the Civic Art Gallery of Forlì.
Pier Francesco Cittadini died in Bologna in 1681.
