Rodolfo Claudus Biography

Rodolfo Claudus, born on 23 April 1893 in Oldenburg, had a particular passion for marine art. His father was an army officer and his uncle, Sternek, an admiral in the Austro-Hungarian navy who may have influenced him.
Claudus' works stand out for their extraordinary images based on events that changed the history of the world, such as the Battle of Lepanto between Christians and Saracens and the arrival of Columbus in the Americas.
Claudus worked on multiple canvases at once, creating each work with notes and ideas "written" in his mind and then brought to life. He mainly used oil as a technique, but was also skilled with watercolor and tempera. Its great ability is to present realistic images through approximate shades, expertly using color with a brush that works for large surfaces.
Claudus died in Rome on 11 April 1964.
