Rene' Clement Biography

René Clément (1913 - 1996), born in 1913 in Bordeaux, died in 1996 in Monaco. He achieved several major popular successes in post-war French cinema. In 1934 he worked with Jacques Tati on visual gags, before becoming an operator in the armies' cinematographic service. He chose the Resistance as the main subject of his first feature film in 1945. The same year, he assisted Jean Cocteau on the set of Beauty and the Beast. His first major popular success was Forbidden Games. Tackle different styles for each new film. From the literary adaptation with Gervaise (in 1956, from Zola's L'Assommoir) or Plein soleil (in 1960, from Patricia Highsmith), to the psychology of Felines (1964), passing through the cerebral thrillers with The Passenger in the Rain (1969 ), The Hare's Race Across the Fields (1972) and a World War II re-enactment for the famous Is Paris Burning? (1966), Clément touches everything. In 1986 he was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts to the chair of the sculptor Georges Hilbert, a chair transferred to the cinema and audiovisual section when the latter was created in 1985. Clément became president of the Academy and the Institute in 1990.
