Francesco Coghetti Biography

Francesco Coghetti was born in Bergamo in 1804. He initially trained at the Carrara Academy under the guidance of Giuseppe Diotti and later of Vincenzo Camuccini in Rome.
His works, mostly on historical and religious subjects, were destined for many patrician houses and many churches in Italy. Towards the middle of the 19th century he frescoed the large face of the cathedral of Savona and on the main door the work "Jesus driving away the merchants from the temple", as well as the two walls of the Sancta Sanctorum. Having moved to Rome, from 1871 to 1873 he dedicated himself to important cycles of frescoes in Palazzo Torlonia, including "The exploits of Alexander", "The triumph of Bacchus". Inside the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura, he frescoed the "Saint Stephen".
In Bergamo, in addition to the frescoes in the Cathedral, his work is "The portrait of Cardinal Nembrini" kept in the Town Hall and "San Michele" in the church of the same name.
Francesco Coghetti also dedicated himself to the training of generations of students, some of whom achieved great fame.
He died in Rome in 1875.
