Giuliano Collina Biography

Giuliano Collina was born in Intra-Verbania in 1938 and has lived in Como since 1944. He attended the Liceo Artistico di Brera (Milan) and in 1962 he graduated from the same Academy of Fine Arts. He taught in high schools, in the Academies of Fine Arts and at the University of Insubria in Como; he collaborated with the architect Mario Botta on his course at the Academy of Architecture of Italian Switzerland in Mendrisio. Today he holds the chair of "Life Drawing" at the A. Galli Academy in Como. From 1988 to 1994 he directed with Francesco Somaini the Higher Drawing Course promoted in Como by the Ratti Foundation. Giuliano Collina exhibited his works for the first time in Milan in 1962 at the Galleria delle Ore, since then he has participated in awards and exhibitions at public and private galleries and has held more than eighty personal exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including in recent years: The body is sacred. Works from 1990 to 2009 at the Diocesan Museum of Milan (2009), Starry Night at the Pinacoteca Civica of Como (2010), Giuliano Collina: anthological exhibition (fifty paintings from 1984 to 2011) at the Michetti Museum of Francavilla al Mare (2011), The painting as a container at the Credito Valtellinese Gallery and at the MVSA in Sondrio (2013), Giuliano Collina: from the witch's game to the tablecloths at the Matasci Gallery in Tenero (CH) (2013), Giuliano Collina at the Carzaniga Gallery in Basel (2015). In 2010 the Nomos Publishing House published one of his monographs edited by Rachele Ferrario and with an introductory essay by Enrico Crispolti. During his activity Giuliano Collina created some public works, including a fresco on the theme of the Apocalypse in the church of the Cimitero Maggiore in Como (1961-62); a tempera mural in the elementary school of Sagnino-Como (1981); on the occasion of the XVIII Triennale of Milan (1992) a large "painting" (650x1120 cm) entitled The square exhibited at the Italia exhibition. The truth of materials, curated by the Triennale di Milano at the “Shanghai Italian Center” in Shanghai (2013-2015). In recent years he has also dedicated himself to sculpture, creating bronze and steel monuments for public and private spaces. Giuliano Collina collaborates with some Como newspapers publishing art criticism articles.
